What is 80% DoD?

Depth of Discharge (DoD) is how much of a battery's capacity you can use before recharging. LiFePO4 lithium batteries can safely discharge to 80% without degrading battery life. Discharging deeper shortens the total number of charge cycles. The calculator reserves 20% as unusable, so your battery bank is sized larger than your raw energy need.

Why does solar need a safety factor?

The 1.25× safety factor accounts for panel inefficiency, wiring losses, charge controller conversion loss, partial shading, and days with less-than-peak sun. Without it, you'd be undersized every time clouds roll in. This calculator uses your region's average — you can still run short on consecutive overcast days, which is where a generator backup earns its keep.
